How to arrive
Hotel Peninsular is very well connected to the rest of the city and other surrounding towns by major underground (line 3), bus and train routes.
Directions from Barcelona's airport:
El Prat airport is at 18 Km from the city centre.
- Taxi: just over 25 minutes ride for approximately 25 €. The fare may vary depending on the day of the week, the time and the amount of luggage.
- Bus: There is a bus from the airport terminal to Plaça Catalunya, which is central to Barcelona city. The ticket price is 4 €. From Catalunya, you can get to the hotel by either walking down Las Ramblas for about 10 minutes, by the tube (green Line 3, to 'Liceu' stop) or by taxi.
- By train: A train-shuttle connects the airport train station with Renfe station Barcelona-Sants. From there, you can take the tube (green line 3) to the 'Liceu' stop, or get a taxi.
Directions from the train station
The main Barcelona's train station is Barcelona-Sants. From there, you can take the tube (green line 3) to the 'Liceu' stop, or get a taxi.
Driving directions
You should enter Barcelona following the signs to the centre of the city: "Centro Ciudad" and "Plaça de Catalunya-Rambles". Once at Plaça Catalunya confluence, head downwards towards the sea and turn right at Sant Pau street. Barcelona's parking fees are between 20€ and 25€ per day.
Directions from the harbour
The passenger terminals of Barcelona's Harbour are situated very close to the end of Las Ramblas boulevard, therefore, one can get to the hotel by just walking up Las Ramblas to Sant Pau street; nevertheless, it is rather more convenient to take a short ride by taxi.
Location Map

Location
Hotel Peninsular is situated in the heart of Barcelona, a few metres away from Las Ramblas and the Liceu Theatre and very close to Plaça Catalunya. It is less than ten minutes walking distance from:
- Barcelona's Harbour
- The Gothic Quarter. The quarter that houses the core of the city's history: Medieval alleyways, Jewish quarter and Roman remains, as well as museums and institutions situated in historical buildings.
- "Ravalejar". This word, not included in any dictionary, is the word used by Barcelona's locals to mean going out and about in the Raval quarter at night —and the whole of the Ancient quarter— and have fun in the terraces, the numerous bars and pubs of all kinds and atmospheres, discos and concert halls. To 'ravalejar', you only need to step out the hotel.
- La Boqueria food market with countless kinds of food
- Shopping. Commercial streets where you can buy all kind of goods and souvenirs.
- Gaudà and Modernism. Close to Casa Batlló building and La Pedrera building, in the Passeig de Grà cia boulevard, and the Palau Güell palace in Nou de la Rambla street. Also close to the Modernism route in general.
By local transport:
- Beaches. Not many cities in the world are blessed with beaches suitable for bathing which can be used by both locals and visitors. However, Barcelona is. All beaches are well maintained and looked after and they are suited to all the family, ideal for bathing and sunbathing. Additionally, there is also a naturist beach. When the night comes, the numerous beach bars become perfect places to have a cool drink. The nearest is La Barceloneta's beach, connected by bus and tube.
- Exhibition Site (Fair). Barcelona's Exhibition Site is not far away from Barcelona's centre. In a few minutes, taking line 3 of the tube, you can get to Plaça España and Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina, where the Exhibition's pavilions are situated. From here a shuttle is available which can be taken to Exhibition Site 2 (further away). Even when there are no scheduled exhibitions, it is still worth going to see the musical choreography of the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc.
- La Sagrada FamÃlia. By tube, you can visit the on-going construction of La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, fruit of Antoni GaudÃ's imagination. The construction works for the completion of this Cathedral continue thanks to visitor's donations.
- Montjuïc. One can get to one of the most beautiful urban parks, Montjuïc, by either bus or cable railway, which leaves from the harbour. There, one can visit the castle-fortress which dominates the city and the harbour of Barcelona; the botanic parks, with species from all over the world; the viewpoints over the city and the harbour; charismatic fountains, such as "Font del Gat"; museums, such as 'Fundació Miró' and the Olympic complex that comprises constructions such us the 1929 Stadium, Palau Sant Jordi and the Telefónica tower, designed by Santiago Calatrava.
- El Tibidabo. Situated at the top of a mountain range that surrounds Barcelona. Accessible by either a bus direct from Plaça Catalunya or by tram and funicular, departing from Avinguda Tibidabo. At the top of the mountain there is a centenarian funfair called "Tibidabo" and the Sagrat Cor temple, visible from nearly any point of the city. But should you not wish to visit the funfair, the restaurant and the viewpoints, you might still wish to walk around the Mediterranean wooded surroundings of Collserola.
Our selection of Recommended links may be of interest should you wish to find out a little more about our city.
Outside Barcelona city, Catalunya offers a rich environment full of tourist attractions, all little more than an hour away. To the North, the Maresme beaches stretch along the coastline right up to the Costa Brava: with its picturesque towns, small fishing ports, beaches and night-life.
South along the coastline are the predominantly tourist towns, like Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú, and the Costa Daurada, which has a rather more familiar feel to it. Salou, in Tarragona, is one of the cities with a major night life and 'Port Aventura' theme park is located near by.
Mountain lovers will find the Montseny massif a place of interest, being a biosphere reserve with a mixture of Mediterranean forest and Central European landscape; also, the Montserrat rocky massif which, situated in the heart of spiritual Catalunya, is a paradise for climbing enthusiasts.
There are also several other routes of interest through the areas surrounding Barcelona: Romanic art routes, Gothic art routes, Modernism in Vallès Oriental, Maresme and la Selva, or gastronomic routes. The rich Catalan gastronomy is well reflected not only in the numerous restaurants boasting Michelin stars, but also in more modest restaurants, with market cuisine, offering the most exquisite seasonal products. At the coast, it is unforgivable not to taste "calderetas" (seafood soup), "paellas", "suquets" (fish casserole) or any of the seasonal fish and seafood available. In the mountain: meats and "embutidos" (variety of cured pork meat products) —such as butifarra—, snails, and seasonal vegetables, such as green beans and peas. Not forgetting the traditional "pantomaca" (bread rubbed with tomato and topped with olive oil), or the 'allioli' (strong and creamy sauce made with garlic and olive oil), especially to accompany "fideuás" (seafood or fish noodles).
Additionally, if you wish to take the wine route, inevitably you will have to start in Sant Sadurnà d'Anoia, a premier cava production centre, where you will be able to have lunch in the cellars and get to know about the production process. Having sampled the Cava, you may wish to proceed and enjoy other original and quality names such as: Pla de Bages, Alella, Penedès, Empordà or Priorat.

History
In its most distant history, the building that houses the Hotel Peninsular was a convent of the Augustinian Order. What are now the guests' rooms were, in the old times, the monks' cells.
Another evidential trace from those times is a secret underground tunnel that used to connect the Saint Augustine church (situated in the back street) with the monks' chambers. This most probably was used during times of conflict and unrest.
The property was secularised and converted into a hotel in 1876. It was during the World Fair, which took place in Barcelona in 1888, when the building saw its birth as a hotel business.
After changing hands several times, the property was purchased in the 60s by its present owners, who undertook thorough restoration work in the 90s in order to improve the facilities and bring out the modernist elements of its architecture.
Today, the Hotel Peninsular is run by the third generation of the owners' family who, through care and dedication, have managed to create a warm familiar environment for their guests.
